Happy Birthday Singapore

With the National Day Parade rehearsals blocking all traffic around the Padang for the last few saturdays, it looks like we're approaching the big day itself, when the nation celebrates one of the biggest parties. It's the big 4-0, when this country hits middle age and people celebrate and dance in the streets. Time to start breaking out the flags and red underwear.

Where has Maison Basque gone?

Our favourite restaurant for duck confit has disappeared. Last seen at the Suntec faountain terrace at basement 1, serving some good pate and excellent duck confit in a choice of raspberry or orange sauce, the restaurant has mysteriously disappeared with no forwarding information. Any information about the present whereabouts of Maison Basque is appreciated.

This is before we lament the lack of good Czech food in Singapore. Prague offers some inexpensve restaurants serving beautifully mouthwatering duck confit. That's what we need here, fast.

Great shopping in the Great Singapore Sale

People visiting Orchard road in the recent past would have noticed the additional stalls and the late opening hours of major departmental stores as Singapore gears to welcome shoppers and visitors from all around the world to shop their heart out on everything from electronic goods like the latest Canon Powershot digital camera to the latest Tungsten PDA, 42 inch plasma screens, shoes like Charles and Keith slingbacks and heels as well as good food. What we lack is a Great Singapore Online Sale to complete the event and offer products on discount online for avid online shoppers to burn some plastic.

Crazy Horse Paris cabaret to show in Singapore

The worldwide famous exotic dance show, the Crazy Horse cabaret, is set to open it's third international show in Singapore, after Paris in Las Vegas. The cabaret, a celebration of the uncovered female form in dance, features classically trained dancers in different acts, each with its own symbolism. Well received worldwide with nightly shows, the Singapore show is likely to attract an audience from the region and even internationally. Auditions for dancers are set to begin soon.

Meanwhile, George Lucas has launched his last star wars film, the Star Wars 3 Revenge of the Sith, which depicts the conversion of Anakin Skywalker to the dark side, to become Darth Vader. Tickets for the opening weekend have been sold out well in advance and this movie is likely to break box office records.

International Maritime Defense Exhibition in town

Government officials from around the world are in Singapore to assess and buy the latest naval and maritime defense systems fomr contractors around the world. The exhibition, based in Singapore Expo and Changi Naval Base, has attracted defense officials and contractors especially from the entire Asia-Pacific region. Analysts estimate that billions of dollars worth of contracts will be signed during the exhibition this week.

New restaurants open in Changi Airport

Singapore's vaunted Changi Airport's Terminal 2 is showing it's new post renovation face, and several restaurants have opened their doors for business. Belonging to popular chains which are doing well downtown, these restaurants appear confident of good business in the heart of Southeast Asia's busiest air hub. Names like House of Sundanese Food, Fish & Co, Pasta Fresca, Crystal Jade, Sakae Sushi and traditional chinese food restaurant Soup restaurant have opened branches on the 3rd level, facing out onto the departure hall.

Net advertising on upswing

Net advertising in on the upswing. MSN has started a text ad service in Singapore. Google is reporting record earnings, and Yahoo! isn't too badly. Conclusion - the net advertising industry is doing well as a whole, as advertisers are turning their attention from more traditional media of advertising, to keep up with their audience. Most advertisers in a recent poll have stated that they will be cutting their budget for print and direct mail advertising to increase their stake in online ads.

Much of the advertising interest is in blogs, RSS as well as over mobile devices, mostly handphones and PDAs.

Singapore to build 2 world class casinos

We would like to categorically state that we are, and always have been in favour of building two casinos in Singapore, as a necessary measure to boost the dwindling travel industry that Singapore depends on.

The government decision is out. 2 world class casinos are to be built, one on the resort island of Sentosa and the other in downtown Singapore by Marina Bay, within easy access of travellers staying in the main shopping district of Orchard Road.

Given that Singapore has a history of making every project it does goes the whole distance to being world class ( think Singapore Airlines ), it is likely that these integrated resorts, with casinos, will be at least as grand, majestic and iconic as those along the strip in Las Vegas.

Gambling in SIngapore had previously been restricted to games like 4D, Toto and soccer betting.

Major casino players including Harrah's and MGM are making a bid to built Singapore's first 2 casinos.

Private property prices in Singapore inch upwards

Latest news has it that the prices of private properties in Singapore are inching upward, drawn by the economic recovery as well as a strengthening US dollar. However, not only are homes costing more these days, it seems the price of oil is rising steadily too, and motorists are starting to feel the pinch.

The government continues its deliberation on who to award the casino contract too. Chances are that it'll be on the reclaimed land just south of the Central Business District, easily accessible to tourists and locals alike, and with the big players bidding, it's likely to be a world class joint.

Terry Shiavo has been murdered. The decision to remove the feeding tube was a decision to murder her slowly by allowing her to starve to death.

Have you done your health screening?

The latest fad these days is a good health screening. With increasing affluence, a recovering economy and resulting good life, people have started realising, early, the importance of a good health screening to prevent little hidden problems from surprising oneself later in life in a far more serious form. The idea to health screening is to detect such problems early and solve them early. For males, predominantly the idea is to screen for cardiac problems and other related chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. For females, it includes a PAP smear to detect cervical abnormalities and a mammogram for older ladies.

Meanwhile, the popular actress-singer Fann Wong is starting to look her age, with her widely publicised yet denied romance with actor Christopher Lee. Now starting to look like you favourite aunt, perhaps it's time to admit to the romance and settle down before she hits the big four "O".

Airfare to Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai down

With competition among budget carriers like Air Asia, Tiger Airways and Valuair, as well as established international carriers like SIA, Thai Airways, Silkair and others, the airfare between Singapore and popular thai destinations is falling.

Eager shoppers can now visit Bangkok for a spot of weekend shopping for around S$100 for a return flight on Tiger Airways, and just a little more on established airlines like Thai Airways. Silkair is offering seats to Phuket for around S$80.

But the best deal, we reckon, is that airfares from Singapore to Chiang Mai have fallen by 50%. Chiang Mai, with it's beautiful hill resorts, is great for a few days to get away from the urban hustle and bustle, and enjoy the clean fresh air. There's definitely none of the shopping that can be found at Bangkok, but you'll come back feeling that much more relaxed.

Cure for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in the pipeline

One of the most interesting pieces in the news today is that British scientists and doctors may have found a method to cure Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. This is a type of diabetes that primarily presents in younger patients, often as potentially fatal diabetic ketoacidosis which may lead to coma and death. These patients are almost always on life-long insulin injections.

However, a solution has been found, where doctors harvest islet cells from cadaveric pancreas, meaning, from dead bodies, and then inject these cells into the patient's liver. An average of 3 injections is required, and some patients have been almost completely cured, not requiring any insulin injections at all.

More research will need to be done, but it appears that there is light at the end of the tunnel for these young patients.

Time to plan for the school holidays

Chinese New Year officially ends today on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar, and it's time to finish giving out those hong bao, get ready to take down the lanterns and multitudes of shiny decorations that grace your home and office. The school holidays approach, in the second week of march, and it's time to plan for a short regional vacation.

Here's a few ideas. Bali, which has survived the terrorist scare, has increased security and the balinese, traditionally a friendly people, are all ready to welcome back tourists. If you're here to party, stay at downtown Kuta, where the action is all around. Hard Rock Hotel Bali has their perennial promotion of S$368 for flight and two nights stay, a pretty good deal for a fairly classy themed hotel.

If you're more of a nature lover, try the Nusa Dua or Sanur beach areas, which are more sophisticated and upmarket. Less crowded, with less people to bother those looking for a bit of quiet and privacy.

But for the ultimate in beauty and luxury, try a stay in Ubud, and wake up opposite rice terraces in the mountains. Stay at Mdm Christina Ong's top-end Begawan Giri Estate for that heavenly feeling of being at the top of the world. There's also a number of budget 3 star hotels at Ubud that won't bust a crater sized defect in your pocket.

Haze sets in as bush fires and forest fires rage

The seasonal haze has started again. Smoke from burning forests in Borneo have traditionally darkened Singaporean skies this time of the year, and at times can cause an increased incidence of upper respiratory tract infections, especially in those exposed to the elements, and the elderly.

So if you do have a sore throat, stay out of the smoke, drink lots of water, and organise a fire brigade to do some fire-bustin' down over at Borneo.

Meanwhile, along Orchard road, the traditional Chingay parade goes on, as always a major draw for locals and tourists, as a celebration for the time of the new year.

Thousands throng Chinatown as Chinese New Year approaches

It's that time of year again when gaudy red decorations line the streets and strangely dressed characters parade around. Nono, not christmas, but Chinese New Year.

Kids celebrate receiving red packets or angbao filled with cash, stuffing their faces with sweets and tangerines while adults indulge in a spot of traditional mahjong and gambling.

Chinatown is thronged with thousands doing their shopping for traditional delicacies and decorations, and will be the main site of celebration during the countdown to the new year.

Microsoft considers limiting updates and patches to legitimate Windows

Breaking news has indicated that Microsoft has concluded tests and are debating whether to implement a tool that will require users to verify that they are using a genuine copy of Windows OS before allowing them to download updates and patches, in an effort to put the squeeze on people using pirated versions of Microsoft software.

The software giant will be making this compulsory for users from three countries, namely China, Norway and the Czech Republic, starting from 7th February 2005, with plans to make it compulsory for users in all countries by the middle of next year.

How to look good for summer

The only way to lose weight is to diet and exercise. The only way to keep weight off is to continue to diet and exercise. I've gotten into this running thing and have come to love running everyday, up to the point that if I don't have time to run and I see people jogging, my legs get itchy and I start feeling jealous.

A lady I know has started running too, 3 times a week. Her dresses are looser, her stomach is firm and flat and she's looking better and better.

In the news today, Korean women are breaking free from the traditional stereotype that sees the female as inferior to the male. There's a long way to go, but there's a start.

Time to get ready for Chinese New Year

It's that time of the year again, when people are still recovering from the aftereffects of the Christmas-New Year party season and are getting ready for the Hari Raya-Chinese New Year party season. Chinatown starts getting sparkly and crowded as people queue for bak kwa and new year goodies.

Meanwhile, McDonald's seems to be responding well since it had the fiasco of being sued by two morbidly obese teenagers and scorned in a documentary entitled "Super-Size Me." They've health-sized their meal portions and have weathered the crisis well, making their food more healthy.

The tsunami aid effort is now in full swing with organisations like the International Red Cross and similar organisations taking over the brunt of the tasks from the first wave of foreign military task forces who came in within a week after the crisis. The damage will take years to repair, the scars will remain for a generation, but it looks like the healing has at least started.
