It's safe to eat fish Face it, all those fears of fishes being unsafe is just junk. With the bonanza catches fishermen are getting, it's a pity that some joker has started a rumor that fishes are unsafe, citing ridiculous reasons such as increased heavy metal content in the fishes for some reason, and the fact that some fishes may eat human bodies. Governemtn agencies like the AVA continue to test batches of fish for safety and there have just not being any shred of evidence that fish are in any way dangerous to consume. It's best to change this mindset before we see a seafood-less reunion dinner on Chinese New Year Eve. Besides, the search and rescue effort is ending, and the clearing and rebuilding phase is beginning in the tsunami ravaged area of Aceh. Huge amounts of aid is pouring in, but the rebuilding programme will have to be a sustained effort. It would be a good thing if the government could win over the population and convince the separatists that the government has their best interests at heart. Humanitarian efforts and aid on course Humanitarian missions to help the people displaced and affected by the south asian tsunami are on course. The summit in Jakarta to discuss the set up of the tsunami warning system is underway. Singapore has devoted so many military resources to this humanitarian mission that it would be hard-pressed to react if any other emergency situation should happen. For the rest of the world, life goes on. Pictures have started appearing of tourists sunbathing and enjoying the nightlife in Patong Beach at Phuket. Tourist Offices have started revealing that the number of hotel rooms affected in Phuket and Maldives are less than 20 % and the rest of the resorts are operational and going well. Death toll surpasses 114,000 The death toll from the tsunami is rising, with the disruption of sanitation and clean water, infectious diseases are starting to set in. Aid and medical missions are starting to arrive in the affected areas, in Thailand, India and Sri Lanka and hopefully they can halt the increasing death toll. Meanwhile, the traffic police has announced that they will be stationing policemen armed with speed cameras on top of bridges to catch speedsters. The traffic police is expected to be out in force this festive season, especially on the night of New Year's Eve, to catch speedsters and drunk drivers. And updates on the elusive casino in Singapore. Expect to pay an entrance fee of SGD 100 per day, or SGD 2000 per month just to enter the casino. Looks like it won't be cheap, but chances are it'll be a real money spinner for the relevant government agency, given the number of avid gamblers around the region. More on the tsunami victims The death toll is mounting, especially in Thailand, Sri Lanka and India, with losses in the tens of thousands, and expected to grow further, with the loss of basic sanitation and water, disease outbreaks are expected. International aid agencies are preparing to go in, to treat the sick and wounded, as well as provide water, food and basic shelter while the damage is slowly repaired. Tsunami wave strikes Sri Lanka, Phuket and Penang; Singapore Safe Big front page news today. An massive earthquake registering 9.0 on the Richter scale at epicentre Aceh in Northern Sumatra has caused tidal waves to strike Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, Phuket, Penang and Kedah, Myanmar, Afghanistan and even the Maldives, leaving tens of thousands dead or missing, and causing billions in damage. It was only through the fast thinking of experienced travel guides in Phuket that many tourists were saved, when they recognised the signs early and ordered the travellers to higher ground, and safety early. The Thai government has also shown the efficiency of their disaster recovery services and medical services with their rapid response to treatment of the injured and sick. Infrastructure for electricity, water and phone lines within Patong are damaged, but other areas around Phuket island are not affected. Penang was affected with huge waves sweeping up Gurney Drive and flooding popular tourist beach Batu Ferringhi, leaving fishing boats stranded along the winding Batu Ferringhi road. Tidal waves also destroyed over 1000 homes in Kedah. Disaster relief and aid have been pledged from several countries and are in the process of being prepared. Hottest and Coolest Countdown Parties in Singapore It's time for politics to take a back seat till the new year is over. Singaporeans are in the mood for partying, as anyone at Orchard Road on Christmas eve can attest. There's lots of countdown parties, mostly downtown and at downtown east ( which really couldn`t get any further from downtown however hard it tries ). The big one is going to be at Orchard Green, right behind Orchard Road, with the action televised live, local celebs running the show, it's free for you to party, party, party. Esplanade has also got their own countdown party by the bay, but this is more for family action rather than juvenile fun.. If you're into dance, you've probably got your tickets to the countdown at Siloso Beach Sentosa, with fireworks, foam party and get ready to party until daylight. Nightspots like Indochine, Chijmes and Devil's Bar have all got their own parties planned out too. Me, i'm getting together with a few friends for a quiet barbeque and some drinks. Nothing too rowdy, since we're all getting old ( past the grand old age of 25 ) and our bones are getting brittle. But, here's to the new year, party hard and don't drive when you're drunk. Healthcare workers wanted To those looking for a change of career, there's good news. The healthcare sector is short of people and there are scholarships to train those interested. Both the public hospitals and the private sector are short of therapists like physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, podiatrists, cardiac technicians, radiographers, radiation therapists. The good thing is, the pay is good and the hours are the standard office hours. Plus you get the satisfaction of going home knowing that you've helped someone feel better. Questionable marketing tactics of alternative health product retailers It really bothers me, the new marketing tactics of providers of questionable health products. They raise the issue of cancer to scare people and try to link their product to either a decreased risk of cancer, a method to pick up cancer early, or ever worse, claim to be able to treat cancer successfully. That's right before they mention the high price for the product, but oh, it's worth it because it helps combat CANCER. Most times, they claim to have evidence that their product works. Almost always, this is anecdotal evidence, and not statistically proven. Even worse, they neglect to mention that the patient who was cured was also simultaneously underwent a curative surgery and was an early stage cancer. And even medical practitioners who use serum PSA as a screening tool for middle aged males. Questionable medical practice at best. I guess the best way is for the buyer to beware and not be taken in by these marketing tactics. Do your own research, learn the truth for your own, even better, ask your doctor for advice. It's Christmas Eve and time to go for some spa treatments It's Christmas Eve and not much is happening in Singapore, except for the throngs of people shopping at Orchard Road and Suntec City, at the same time soaking in the festive ambience and joyful spirit. In other words, massive jam at Orchard road, so don't head down there if you're agoraphobic. And does EVERYBODY leave their christmas shopping to the last minute? After heading home from the tiring job of lugging all that shopping home, perhaps it's time to head for some spa treatment, a shiatsu massage by skilled hands. We're gonna start looking at some spas before we tell you what's good and what's not. If you have any leads on good spas, email us at singaproe at searchbabe dot com. Missing Girl Found Little 9 year old Kaye Charish Mae Patino, who went missing 2 days before Christmas, has been found.
