Arthritis painkillers linked to heart attack, stroke

Increasing evidence has been put forward linking COX-2 inhibitor class painkillers Bextra and Celebrex to an increased risk or heart attacks and stroke. These drugs are painkillers that are used commonly for arthritis and joint pains because they were previously thought to have less side effects than the older NSAID painkillers.

However, since Merck Sharpe and Dohme withdrew popular COX-2 inhibitor Vioxx from the market, patients and doctors have been paying more attention to increasing evidence that other Cox-2 inhibitors present similar risks, especially when used over a prolonged period. The problem is, arthritis tends to be a chronic problem requiring prolonged use of these painkillers, which puts these patients at an increased risk.

Pfizer, manufacturer of Bextra and Celebrex, have up to now not indicated any intent to withdraw these drugs from the market.

Most mothers to be willing for HIV test

Hardly unexpected, given that it is almost a reflex for a woman to want the best for her child, and most women who are looking forward to seeing their pregnancy through to childbirth are really serious about it. Often, the main group of the HIV positive pregnant mothers are those who have contracted it from their philandering and promiscuous husbands or partners who have then passed it on to them. There is a risk of transmitting the virus to the unborn child.

Even so, HIV is only one of many sexually transmitted diseases that can plague childbirth. The recent hoo-ha about Hepatitis B seems to have died down, but one must remember that Hepatitis B can be prevented by vaccines ( x 3 shots in total over a course of 6 months.) Hepatitis B can cause long term chronic liver decompensation ( read : liver failure, even requiring transplant ) and carries a 0.5% risk of liver cancer, which is often a cancer with a poor prognosis.

Tragedy as MediaWorks and MediaCorp TV merge

The recent merger of the TV and newspaper arms of SPH and Mediacorp is, for want of a better word, a tragedy. Under the terms of the deal, SPH will takeover the newspaper arm of MediaCorp while MediaCorp will capture the TV arm of SPH. This also means that at least 200 staff will be retrenched and lose their jobs and livelihood.

This all started way back in 2000 when SPH was granted a TV broadcasting license as part of a government initiative to promote and stimulate competition and offer viewers and advertisers a choice. However, both SPH and MediaCorp were somehow unable to make things work, suffering financial losses before deciding to call its quits and return to their traditional niches.

However, this has only proven a tragedy for everyone else involved. Viewers now don't get a choice of programs that they had previously, advertisers are subject to an advertising monopoly, and artistes will face more stingy contract terms, given that they have no alternative employer to consider. One has to start seriously considering if companies like SPH and MediaCorp will be able to survive in a free market if pitted against similar sized foreign competitors.

LASIK gets cheaper, but how safe is it, really?

The price of Lasik surgery for myopia and astigmatism has been coming steadily, with the present cost at under S$2k per eye at SNEC, but how safe is it, really? Studies have shown a complication rate as high as 1 in 10, including the most common serious complication of corneal ectasia, sometimes secondary to herpes simplex infection post-op whch results in the patient not only losing any effects of the surgery but has to undergo a corneal transplant and will be lucky to even regain back his former vision. Perhaps it is time to be careful with cosmetic surgery and not jump on the bandwagon before knowing what you're getting into.

News has also broken on gambling rings using funeral wakes as a gathering point for gamblers, to hide the nature of their activities. Looks like it won't last for long, though.

Civil servants get 2 1/4 month annual bonus

With the recovery and sustained growth of the Singapore economy, the government has declared a surprisingly high 2 1/4 month bonus for civil servants. The private sector is expected to follow with a similarly generous annual bonus and the Christmas retail period looks like it'll be a busy time for retailers and a good time for children looking for their dream christmas presents.

A closer look at romance in Singapore

What with the news that Singaporean men are unable to find brides locally and previously looked toward China and now are looking at marrying girls from Vietnam, Kalimantan and other neighbouring countries. Similarly, an increasing number of ladies are unable to find a suitably sophisticated, intelligent and self-confident guy to spend their life with.

Experts have put it down to the increasing educational level for the females, and the fact that they are unwilling to "marry down" - not willing to concede for a guy who is less educated than them. Perhaps it's all a personal choice, but we say, open your eyes, relax, and perhaps sometime soon someone special may just come along. After all, Valentine's day is just around the corner. To the girl who yearns for a bouquet of roses, we say, drop us an email telling us why at sendmeflowers at searchbabe dot com.

Christmas cheer comes to Singapore

The Christmas spirit is evident in Singapore indeed. Take a stroll down Orchard road on any evening. Better yet, enjoy the christmas lights and decorations on a saturday night. Orchard road, normally busy, becomes jam-packed with virtually no space to move. Shoppers throng the malls and pavements with shopping bags in hand, to the delight of retailers and children in anticipation of presents.

Christmas themed movies are also out. Christmas with the Kranks is a typical story of a family rediscovering christmas, while the Polar Express, voiced by the unimitable Tom Hanks, is about the dream of children to visit the North Pole. Perhaps it's time to dig out those carol CDs to sing along with again.

Mobile Telecommunications Provider M1 to launch 3G trials

MobileOne ( M1 ), one of the biggest mobile telecommunications providers in Singapore is poised to launch trials to evaluate their 3G service, with a view toward a launch of their services for retail. The infrastructure has been set up at quite a substantial cost and will undergo extensive testing. However, analysts believe that it is in the provision of content to draw subscribers that M1 will face the greatest challenge.

Meanwhile, Forbes has linked severe obesity to poor nookie. Meaning, the fatter you are, the worse your enjoyment in bed and the less pleasure you'll enjoy. Happily, it also means losing weight is likely to improve your performance too. Now you have another another good reason to diet and exercise.

Creative gets ready to shake up the MP3 player market

Homegrown multinational Creative Technologies is gunning for top spot in the digital music player market, going up against Apple's iPod.

Previously more likely to hold modest product launches in their corporate HQ in Jurong, Creative is spending over US$100 million to advertise the advantages of their products over market rivals in a bid to enhance sales and outdo rivals.

Prices of their players are also coming down as features go up. If you want to get a christmas present and don't know what to get, consider the new Creative Zen Micro which looks good and functions well.

Singapore ready for casino

Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has given the first indications of the government position toward casinos with statements that Singapore is ready for a casino, amidst news that S$2 billion will be pumped in to the development of an integrated resort with gaming facilities.

Meanwhile, Time Asia has listed three must-visit Singapore spots for visitors.

Number 1 is the winner of The Best Airport Surprise award, The Swimming Pool, a rooftop sanctuary at Changi Airport Terminal 1 that houses a jellybean-shaped pool and a Jacuzzi that Time describes as being able to "turn downtime between flights into an unexpected extension of your holiday".

Number 2 is the Boom Boom Room, the busy nightspot that boasts stand-up drag comedian Kumar, and what Time Asia rates as the best version of the Singapore Sling.

Coming up at number 3 is Hotel 1929, located along the infamous red light district of Keong Siak Street. Winning the best accolade of best budget hotel, it boasts designer furniture, a stylish and chic restaurant, and constantly draws a yuppie crowd.

Other news includes evidence that prolonged computer use is linked to deteriorating eyesight. So get away from that computer when you can, and give yuor eyes some rest.

Singapore Motorshow shows off new concept models

On the island nation that boasts possibly the highest car prices in the whole world, the biggest motorshow has drawn huge crowds who visit to gawk at the hot models and concept designs.

This regional show, held at Suntec, has most major car manufacturers displaying their concept designs, giving an idea of their future directions. And they take the chance to sell off existing models. Alfa Romeo expects to sell at least 20 cars by the end of the motorshow on 21st November 2004.

Among the futuristic models on show is the 750 cc Rinspeed Splash, which can travel on land at 200 kmh and above water at a speed of 80 kmh. The manufacturers plan to stage a Channel crossing.

Admission costs S$10 for adults and S$4 for children.
