Where should I have lunch in Singapore ?

Often, too many choices for lunch can make choosing where to eat such a difficult choice. When a thousand and one places serve good food, where to you go?

We've tried the wanton mee along keong siak road, it's not bad, especially the char siew and wanton. The noodles are done in a cantonese style, and are pretty decent by any standard. They open 11 am till 8 and are closed on sundays. Good thing we went on a weekday afternoon.

The Katong Laksa craze

There's numerous pretenders to the famous Katong Laksa, such that even the Straits Times and Makansutra ( and numerous other food reviewers ) have given their own take on it. Here's our pwn private take on it, impartial and frank, decided not by tracing the historical roots of each stall, but instead by tasting and choosing the best.

The best Katong laksa we tasted is not even near to the others. it's more in the Kembangan / Siglap area, at the little modest coffee shop at the southeast corner of the Upper Changi Road / Telok Kurau road junction, directly opposite the SPC petrol station. THe little stall just has a little sign on a red background station "Katong Laksa", and starts from a modest SGD 2.50 per bowl. The serving is adequate, and the lemak gravy sufficiently rich to satisfy your taste buds.

Fried Hokkien Mee in Singapore

One of the most popular dishes for any meal, fried hokkien mee, is a stir fried mixed of yellow mee, bee hoon, bean sprouts, egg, pork slices and other delectable bits. Here's our recommendations on the places with the best hokkien mee.

First up is Chomp Chomp's Ah Hock fried hokkien mee at the popular Serangoon Gardens hawker centre. The queues are long and the wait usually around half and hour, but it's worth it for the fragrant and very delicious dish of noodles.

Somewhere further north is the one at the coffeeshop at Blk 630 along Ang Mo Kio Street 61. It's fried in a wetter style, and large portions get wrapped up in a special leaf designed to hold in the fragrance of the dish.

Over in the east, try the one at the Bedok Road hawker centre. Fried in a darker, wetter style, it too boasts long queues and waits averaging half an hour as each dish is fried individually, sparing no effort to ensure each dish prepared is of the highest quality possible.

Hidden treasures in Hong Lim Square

Hong Lim hawker centre is probably quite well known as the home of Singapore's best char kway teow, formerly from Outram Park, tasting sinfully good with little lard bits, as well as the delish curry mee that used to be sold just across the road.

It's also got pretty decent prawn mee, wan tan mee, and really really good porridge that's addictive. Mostly, people associate porridge with something tasteless and bleah. The porridge at the corner ground floor of Hong Lim, right next to the Bak Kut Teh, will change your mind. Sinfully fragrant, with a choice of pork or fish ( obviously I went for the pork, being the pig cannibal that i was ), it'll have you wanting for more more more. Kinda why I'm always coming back to Hong Lim for lunch.

Food in the housing estates

I was enjoying a plate of Ang Mo Kio North's finest wan ton mee, and looking around when I realised that tourists and travellers to Singapore were never going to find, or enjoy the hidden treats. Whether it is the duck rice at Tiong Bahru hawker centre, the Songzhou fried carrot cake at Bedok hawker centre, or even the curry fish head in Toa Payoh, they're not going to be able to enjoy the vaunted tasty Singapore food. Most will have to be content with the usual fare that they get at the food courts in Orchard, or for the more upmarket, a go at Straits Cafe in the Grand Hyatt. Still, there's joy to be had knowing we can still get a tasty meal at less than USD 1.50 in the heartlands.

Where has Maison Basque gone?

Our favourite restaurant for duck confit has disappeared. Last seen at the Suntec faountain terrace at basement 1, serving some good pate and excellent duck confit in a choice of raspberry or orange sauce, the restaurant has mysteriously disappeared with no forwarding information. Any information about the present whereabouts of Maison Basque is appreciated.

This is before we lament the lack of good Czech food in Singapore. Prague offers some inexpensve restaurants serving beautifully mouthwatering duck confit. That's what we need here, fast.

3 great places for beef noodle soup

You're on the hunt for some good noodle soup. Maybe you like sliced beef, beef brisket. We've tried quite a number of really good beef noodle soup stalls in Singapore and here are our recommendations for you.

East Coast Parkway. At the famous east coast parkway hawker centre, at the end nearest the service road, there's the Laguna beef noodle stall, with two distinguishing factors. A red signboard and a really long queue. It's usually open for dinner only. Get there by five and you'll probably wait around 10 minutes. Get there anytime after six and you'll face at least a 30 to 45 minute wait as the chef does each bowl of noodles individually and painstakingly. The kway teow is divine, soft yet not sticky. The only downside is how stingy they are with the chilli. On the other hand, if you're a beautiful girl, you can go back for a second helping of the fragrant and delicious soup.

Whampoa Road Hawker Centre. Stall #01-735 at the Whampoa road hawker centre offers some fine beef kway teow too. The servings are more generous than the stall at east coast parkway. The queues and waiting time is also shorter, this stall being less famous. However, the quality of the food does not lack in any way and we're pretty sure you'll enjoy this bowl of beef noodle soup.

Hock Lam Road Beef Noodle. With an almost legendary reputation in the realm of beef noodle lovers, this stall now operates their own outlet at Far East Square near Raffles Place, just opposite Don's Chicken Pie Club. The soup version is as good as the dry version and the lunch crowds from the nearby office buildings are often scary. But it's just testimony to how good the food here is.
