Tsunami wave strikes Sri Lanka, Phuket and Penang; Singapore SafeBig front page news today. An earthquake at epicentre Bandar Acheh in Northern Sumatra has caused tidal waves to strike Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, Phuket, Penang and Kedah, Myanmar, Afghanistan and even the Maldives, leaving tens of thousands dead or missing, and causing billions in damage.It was only through the fast thinking of experienced travel guides in Phuket that many tourists were saved, when they recognised the signs early and ordered the travellers to higher ground, and safety early. The Thai government has also shown the efficiency of their disaster recovery services and medical services with their rapid response to treatment of the injured and sick. Infrastructure for electricity, water and phone lines within Patong are damaged, but other areas around Phuket island are not affected. Penang was affected with huge waves sweeping up Gurney Drive and flooding popular tourist beach Batu Ferringhi, leaving fishing boats stranded along the winding Batu Ferringhi road. Tidal waves also destroyed over 1000 homes in Kedah. Disaster relief and aid have been pledged from several countries and are in the process of being prepared.
