Wal-Mart Launches WMA Music Downloads Service

Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has officially launched its digital music store Music Downloads and has improved many features of its service since it began offering song downloads on a trial basis in December 2003.

Offering cut price downloads at 88 cents person, all downloaded songs are in Microsoft's WMA format (128-bit) with consistent usage rules and can be burned or transferred to compatible portable devices.

It is considerably cheaper than most other download services without a subscription, including Apple's iTunes and Roxio's Napster who charge 99 cents a song. One downside is that Wal-Mart's catalog of available music for download appears to be smaller than the market leaders, though a company spokesman said the catalog of available song titles has doubled in the past three months and will continue to expand.

On the plus side, Wal-Mart`s Music Downloads is offering songs unavailable elsewhere, including tracks by Jessica Simpson, 3 Doors Down, the Black Eyed Peas, Hilary Duff, Shania Twain, Shakira, P.O.D. and JC Chasez. Music Downloads also offers, on and exclusive basis, songs by finalists of Oprah Winfrey's "Pop-Star Challenge.", and has announced a deal to offer more than 3,000 songs on an exclusive basis from Curb Records, the label of country superstars such as Tim McGraw, LeAnn Rimes and Jo Dee Messina.

Customer response during the test phase was extremely positive and indicated strong demand, said company spokesman Kevin Swint.

As a result of the early experiences. Wal-Mart has added a download manager to the software that simplifies the process of purchasing more than one song and improved the site's searching and browsing.

Wal-mart also recognises that many users may be new to digital music, and hence its Music Downloads service will be offering 24-hour phone and e-mail support.

The Music Downloads service was developed in partnership with Anderson Merchandisers.
